Intelligent Systems Programming and Technology Laboratory

Short Description: The Intelligent Systems Laboratory was established in 2001 in the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Crete, Greece.

The role of this laboratory is to educate undergraduate and graduate students in the concepts and techniques of modern Intelligent Systems and to carry out cutting-edge research in this area. Current research work spans many areas, such as Multimedia and Web information systems, Semantic Web, Machine Learning, Robotics, Bioinformatics, Computer vision, Peer-to-Peer computing and Intelligent Agents.

The laboratory is funded by the Technical University of Crete and various Greek and European funding institutions.

Education and Research:

Research

  • Multimedia, Medical and Web Information Systems: Information systems technology with emphasis on the management (processing, information extraction, dissemination and retrieval) of complex information. As such, a database is not only considered from a standalone perspective; its strength lies in its potential association with other technological approaches e.g., web, content-based approaches.
  • Semantic Web: Our work aims at enhancing the capabilities of state-of-the-art information systems and their support for information analysis and reasoning by exploiting the time dimension in the information possessed. Knowledge is being interpreted through Time Determined Ontology (TDO) models encoding concepts and relationships acquired by experts and by data analysis. It is developed based on state-of-the-art natural language processing, data analysis (including signal and image analysis) and semantic web technology (e.g., OWL, OWL reasoners, query languages) thus exploiting leading edge technology in knowledge management.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Extraction: Information extraction from text sources, mining concepts and relationships for ontology construction in information systems design and development. This work permits informal textual descriptions of multimedia content to be effectively used in retrieval, and obviates the need for generating structured metadata. Informal descriptions require significantly less human labor than structured descriptions. This work permits enables also knowledge interpretation through ontologies and ontology-based and web-search engines.
  • Access Methods for Images and Video: Information retrieval, Information systems, Multimedia information systems, Web Information systems, Image/Spatial Databases, Image content analysis, Image indexing, Retrieval by image content.
  • applications of computer vision: Image / video processing and compression, Image / Video content analysis and description (e.g., motion analysis, shape analysis, object tracking), Pattern recognition. Design and analysis of Inspection Systems; Panoramic image generation; Real-time implementation of integrated imaging systems on DSP boards.
  • Machine Learning: Research in various aspects of machine learning with emphasis on reinforcement learning, whereby an agent learns how to act rationally in an unknown environment through trial and error.
  • Robotics: Research in autonomous robotics with emphasis on probabilistic methods and algorithmic aspects. Our lab is the home of the RoboCup team Kouretes (www.kouretes.gr).
  • Artificial Intelligence: Research in modern areas of Artificial Intelligence, including Game Playing, Intelligent Search, Probabilistic Reasoning, and Auction-Based Coordination.
  • Intelligent Agents: Τheory and practice. Results applied to the following applications: Information retrieval,Information dissemination over wide-area networks, Electronic commerce, Peer-to-Peer Computing, Business Process Modelling and Design.
  • Peer-to-Peer Computing: Αgent systems, distributed computing, natural ecosystems and economics.
  • Grid Computing: Αspects similar to the ones of P2P computing (e.g., resource allocation), but also special interest in the role of Grid computing in bioinformatics.
  • Bioinformatics: Development of tools that manage biological data and assist biologists in their research. Utilization of expertise in modern technologies such as data and knowledge-base management systems, intelligent agents, P2P computing and computational grids.
  • Data and Knowledge-Base Systems: The Knowledge Representation Language Telos. The Scheme of Indefinite Constraint Databases. Spatial and Temporal Database Management.
  • constraint programming Cardinal Direction Constraints. Tractable Disjunctive Constraints. Temporal Disjunctive Constraints. The Scheme of Indefinite Constraint Databases.
