Abstract: We are experiencing a dramatic tussle between the users’ media consumption needs and what wireless operators can offer. Distributed storage of popular content as close to the user as possible (small cells or even UEs) is considered as a “sine qua non” towards keeping up with user demand, while controlling operator costs. While this has led to a spur of research around caching for wireless networks, a number of crucial shortcomings remain towards providing better user QoE for everyone, everywhere, and at an affordable cost. As an increasing percentage of content requests are driven by recommendation engines of popular applications (e.g., Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, etc.), we argue that caching algorithms should be jointly optimized with recommendation algorithms, towards satisfying the user rather than satisfying isolated requests.  In this talk, we will consider in more detail the “why” (win-win-win for operators, content providers, and users), the “how” (through modern optimization and graph theory), and the “where” (architectural developments in 5G and beyond that facilitate this approach).

Short Bio: Thrasyvoulos Spyropoulos is an Associate Professor at EURECOM, France. He holds a PhD degree from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, US, and has spent a year as a postdoc at INRIA, Sophia-Antipolis, and 3 years as a Senior Researcher at ETH Zurich. His research interests include performance analysis and modeling of wireless systems, optimization and online learning, content-centric networks, and social networks. He has co-authored more than 100 publications in international conferences and journals, and has served in the TPC of ACM MobiHoc, ACM Sigmetrics, and IEEE Infocom, and has co-chaired ACM CHANTS 2013, IEEE NetSciCom 2014, and IEEE/IFIP CCDWN 2019. He is  the co-recipient of the best paper awards at IEEE Secon 2008, IEEE WoWMoM 2012, and runner-up for ACM Mobihoc 2011 and IEEE WoWMoM 2015. He is an associate editor for ACM/IEEE Transactions on Networking, and has also received a French (ANR) Young Investigator grant.
