Foteini Agrafioti: HeartID Cardiac Biometric Recognition

Foteini Agrafioti, engineer at the University of Toronto, developed HeartID for the security and surveillance company Bionym. The biometric technology essentially allows your heartbeat to be your password to login to different applications and software. Agrafioti explained that that, “ECG biometrics identifies people by their cardiac rhythm. Not just their heart rate, but the actual shape of their heartbeat.” Everyone’s heartbeats are unique and follow an irregular pattern that never quite repeats. In the future, biometric logins could possibly replace passwords. We’re already seeing facial recognition technology, and apps that unlock smartphones by scanning the user’s palm.
