Title

Dependable and Energy Efficient Operation of Modern Microprocessors

Abstract

In this talk, we will present the challenges around the pessimistic voltage margins of modern microprocessors and the ways on how we can exploit them to significantly improve the total power consumption. We mainly focus on the analysis and characterization of the trade-offs between energy and performance during different voltage and frequency scaling combinations, as well as in different number of running processes in the system and their core allocation. Next, we will examine the post-silicon validation challenges facing the industry today in modern microprocessors. We will present new techniques that the industry can use to unveil rare and difficult-to-detect bugs, which have been observed to persist across microprocessor generations. We mainly focus on the post-silicon validation of the two most challenging microarchitectural subsystems: the address translation mechanisms and the register renaming subsystem of modern out-of-order microprocessors.

About the speaker

George Papadimitriou is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Dept. of Informatics & Telecommunications at the University of Athens. He earned a PhD in Computer Science from the same department in 2019, where he worked with Prof. Dimitris Gizopoulos. His research focuses on dependable and energy-efficient computer architectures, microprocessor reliability, functional correctness of hardware designs and design validation of microprocessors. Recently, he co-organized and participated in several tutorials around these research areas at MICRO and ISCA and has published more than 30 papers in international conferences and journals.
