Electronics Laboratory

Short Description: The activities of the Electronics Laboratory of the School of Electronic and Computer Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, include research, development, training and technology transfer in the fields of optoelectronics and micro- nano- electronics. The Lab’s research activities are focused in Hyper-Spectral imaging instrumentation and data analysis, optical molecular imaging, biophotonic medical diagnostic devices, high frequency microelectronics, CMOS design and modeling.

The Electronics Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for design, simulation, layout, prototyping, characterization and testing of optoelectronic and microelectronic systems and devices.

The Electronics Laboratory members strive for research excellence and high quality education in advanced topics of optoelectronics and microelectronics. The lab members have succeeded in establishing long-term collaborations with internationally reputable academic and industrial institutions and in attracting funds from research grants and through technology and know-how transfer contracts to leading industries in the fields of opto- and micro-electronics

Education and Research: 
Research
Research activities of the Electronics Lab are divided in two groups: the Optoelectronics Group (Group leader Associate Prof. Costas Balas) and the Microelectronics Group (Group leader Assistant Prof. Matthias Bucher). The research activities of each group are briefly outlined below:

• Optoelectronics Group
Design and development of optical imaging systems and devices for medical diagnostic applications. Hyper-Spectral Imaging technologies. Hyper-spectral data analysis (spectral cube)-spectral segmentation and classification algorithms. Real-time multi-band imaging cameras. Tissue spectroscopy. Hyper-Spectral Microscopy. Development of imaging devices for the quantitative mapping study and modeling of the dynamic optical signals (optical molecular imaging). Development of innovative biophotonic devices for non invasive diagnosis and screening of precancerous lesions. Imaging systems and methods for non-destructive analysis.
• Microelectronics group
RF/microwave characterization of semiconductor micro- and nanoelectronic devices. Design of analog/RF integrated circuits (ICs). Development of computer aided design (CAD) tools for the characterization and design of IC components and circuits. Development, implementation, parameter extraction of compact models for design and circuit simulation of ICs, with emphasis on radio-frequency (RF) and analog aspects. Development of the EKV3 advanced next-generation compact MOSFET model. Development of compact models for High-Voltage MOSFETs (HV/LDMOS), and nanoscale multi-gate silicon-on-insulator (SOI) MOSFETs such as FinFETs.
