International Award by the Electrical Machines Committee of the ΙΕΕΕ Transactions on Industry Applications

The paper entitled "A Novel Harmonic Isolation Method for the Reliable Detection of Rotor Breakages in Induction Motors" has been selected for the Third Prize Paper Award by the Electrical Machines Committee of the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications for 2026.

The research and authors' team of the paper represents 6 universities across 4 countries and consists of P. A. Panagiotou (University of Sheffield, UK), Z. Song (University of Sheffield, UK), J. C. Mayo-Maldonado (University of Southampton, UK), I. Arvanitakis (Coventry University, UK), G. Escobar (Technological Institute of Monterrey, Mexico), J. A. Antonino-Daviu (Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain), and K. N. Gyftakis (Technical University of Crete, Greece).

The Technical University of Crete is represented by Prof. Konstantinos Gyftakis of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Director of the Electrical Machines Laboratory (EMLab), who was the coordinator of the research team.

The awarded paper proposes a novel methodology for the detection of rotor electrical faults in induction motors, and one that can be applied independently from the loading or the operating speed of the motor. The method is based on harmonic isolation of the stator current and offers a reliable solution for international industry, especially for faulty cases where traditional and commercially available methods fail. The paper demonstrates the theoretical background of the proposed method, presents results from electromagnetic simulations from different induction motors, and concludes with experimental verification on a real electromechanical system.  

The award will be presented to the authors team at the meeting of the IEEE IAS Electrical Machines Committee during the ΙΕΕΕ Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, Vancouver, Canada, on October 6, 2026.
