In the academic year 2024-2025, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) organized two educational visits for the students of the Technical University of Crete within the framework of the courses “Art and Technology” and “History of Civilization” offered by the School of ECE. The visits were coordinated and supervised by the instructor of the two courses Dr. Alexandra Kouroutaki, Specialized Lab and Teaching member of the School of ECE.
The first educational visit took place at the Museum - Residence of Eleftherios Venizelos in Halepa, Chania, on November 16, 2024. The visit was organized within the framework of the elective course “Art and Technology.”
The students attended a detailed guided tour of the grounds of Venizelos' house, which has been transformed and developed into an exceptionally structured Museum, with scientific documentation, sensitivity, and respect for the personality of the Ethnarch.
The detailed two-hour tour conducted by the Museum's staff emphasized the impressive art and technology exhibits kept in the Museum. Special mention was made of works of art and historical photographs, authentic museum objects, furniture, machines, cars, and material evidence that bring an entire era to life and promote historical memory.
Warm thanks are expressed to the administration and staff of the Museum for their kind assistance, hospitality, and such an interesting tour.
The second educational visit took place at the archaeological site of Knossos and then at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, on 18 May 2025 (International Museum Day), with the participation of forty (40) students of the Technical University of Crete. The visit was organized within the framework of the interdepartmental elective course “History of Civilization,” which is attended by students of the Schools of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Production Engineering and Management, and Mineral Resources Engineering. Five (5) students of the School of Architecture also participated in the educational visit.
At the Heraklion Archaeological Museum (HAM), the students attended a guided tour of the permanent collection and the temporary exhibition “Ecatompolis: The World of Archaic Crete,” by Dr. Irene Galli, Head of the Department of Preclassical, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman Antiquities, HAM. In a scientific and direct manner, she presented aspects of the brilliant Minoan civilization and, subsequently, the fascinating history of the foundation and development of cities in Crete, during the Archaic period (7th-5th century BC), approximately 500 years after the end of the Minoan world, a not well known period of Cretan archaeology and history.
Warm thanks are expressed to the HAM Directorate, to Dr. Irene Galli, as well as to archaeologist Chrysa Panigyraki for her kind assistance in the educational visit, the provision of specialised knowledge and the guided tour of the archaeological site of Knossos.
