Educational visit of ECE School students to the High Voltage Laboratory of ELEMKO in Thebes, Greece

From April 19 to April 22, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the Technical University of Crete organized an educational visit of 45 students from the School ECE to the High Voltage Laboratory of ELEMKO SA in Thebes. The visit took place within the framework of the courses “Field Trips” and “Design of Electrical Installations,” under the supervision of Dean, Professor Georgios Karystinos, Assistant Professor Georgios Peppas, and Associate Professor Konstantinos Gyftakis. The tour was hosted by Dr. Nikolaos Kokkinos, CEO of ELEMKO, whom we warmly thank for the hospitality and excellent educational level provided by the team of ELEMKO SA to the students of the ECE School.

Three parallel sessions were held for a) principles of external lightning protection, b) grounding systems (design, research and development, certification, and construction of grounding equipment), and c) laboratory tests with impulse voltage generator up to 500kV 1.2/50μs and lightning impulse currents up to 100kA 10/350μs. During the tests and sessions, the students had the opportunity to observe applications of low-voltage electrical installations and tests on both surge protection devices (SPDs) and insulation coordination cases. Finally, measurements of grounding resistance were conducted in different grounding topologies, focusing on their effectiveness and their correlation with the electrical equipment of electrical installations.
