Goal-based BPaaS Design & Composition

As organizations operate under a highly dynamic business world, they can only survive by optimizing their business processes (BPs) and outsourcing complementary functionality to their core business. To this end, they adopt service-orientation & cloud computing as the underlying mechanisms enabling BP optimization and evolution, giving rise to the notion of Business Process as a Service (BPaaS). As such, various BPaaS design approaches have been proposed. However, these approaches cannot re-use existing business and software services (SSs) to realize the required BPaaS functionality. Moreover, non-functional requirements and their impact on BPaaS design are not considered. In this research presentation, we will analyze a novel, goal-oriented method for discovering and composing BPaaSes by considering BPaaS functional and non-functional goals at both the business and IT level. This method advances the state-of-the-art in service composition by being able to both select the best composition plan and the best services realizing the plan tasks based on novel plan and service selection criteria.

About the speaker

Kyriakos Kritikos is an Affiliated Researcher at ICS-FORTH and an Associate Professor at the University of the Aegean in Greece. He obtained his BSc, MSc, and PhD from the Computer Science Department of University of Crete. He was an ERCIM post-doc fellow at CRN in Pisa and CRP Henri Tudor in Luxembourg. He was also a post-doc collaborator in the Politecnico di Milano. Dr. Kritikos has participated in many European and national projects while he has been a reviewer in numerous conferences and journals. He is currently a member of the board of Elsevier's Journal of Systems and Software and Array. His research interests include semantic cloud service discovery and composition, cloud service modelling, quality-based (micro-)service management, cloud application and service monitoring and adaptation, serverless computing, polymorphic application management, and constraint optimization.
