 f2b325e674f147baa\nAbstract\n In rel
ation to the study of the evolution
of coastal flooding, focus is given
to the role of impulsive waves and t
heir potential impact of coasts. An
analysis is proposed largely based o
n use of analytical and numerical so
lutions developed by the UNIVPM Hydr
 aulics research group.\n Starting fr
om the setup of the Nonlinear Shallo
 w Water Equations (NSWE) framework,
an assessment of the Initial Value v
s Boundary Value Problem is given, f
ollowed by the description of some a
pplications and the proposal of a ne
w set of Dispersive NSWE.\n Numerica
l solvers for the NSWE and DNSWE are
  also briefly described, by highligh
 ting some similarities and differenc
 es with Boussinesq-type solutions. F
inally, a quasi-3D model is describe
 d, its performances being evaluated
in relation to both impulsive and pe
 riodic waves.\n Applications are als
o shown, of a recent simplified appr
oach that blends analytical and nume
 rical techniques to provide informat
ion of tsunami impacts on large regi
ons of coastline with a relatively s
mall numerical effort. A modeling ch
ain approach is used to enable use o
 f wave information typically employe
d in tsunamis warning procedures, th
en propagated inshore by means of an
analytical method based on an exten
sion of Green’s law and subsequently
  by means of high-resolution numeric
al solutions, this giving a fairly a
ccurate description of the flooded a
 reas.\n  \n About the Speaker\n Maur
izio Brocchini is an expert in the h
 ydrodynamics and morphodynamics of c
 oastal, estuarine and riverine water
s, with over 30 years of experience
in the field. His main area of resea
rch is the mathematical and numerica
l modelling of shallow water dynamic
 s. He graduated in Theoretical Physi
cs, with full marks and honours, in
1989 at the University of Bologna (I
taly). He earned his PhD in Applied
Mathematics in 1996 at the Universit
 y of Bristol (UK).\n Formerly Head o
f the Civil, Building Engineering an
d Architecture Department, at the Un
 iversità Politecnica delle Marche, A
ncona, he is Full Professor of Hydra
ulics and Fluid Mechanics. He was tu
tor for 21 PhD theses and for over 5
0 MSc theses. He has managed and col
laborated on 13 European Union compe
 titive projects, 5 competitive proje
 cts launched by international organi
 zations outside the European Union,
 and 6 national competitive research
projects funded by the Italian Minis
try of Research. He is Associate Edi
tor of the scientific journal "Journ
al of Waterways Ports Coasts and Oce
an Engineering", A.S.C.E. He is also
a member of the editorial boards of
  the following journals: "Coastal En
 gineering", Elsevier; "Journal of Hy
 drodynamics", Elsevier; "Ocean Engin
 eering", Elsevier. He regularly revi
ews proposals for over 10 research f
unding agencies in Italy, Europe, an
d the United States. He is author/co
-author of over 150 peer-reviewed pa
 pers appearing on Scopus/ISI-listed
 international journals, with total c
itations of over 4600 and H-index of
36 (Scopus). He was awarded by the
European Community a Marie Curie Fel
lowship for research in the years 19
 93-1996. Listed among the “World’s T
op 2% Scientists”. From 2023 to pres
ent Member of the “Commissione Grand
i Rischi” of the Italian Civil Prote
 ction – Tsunami Section.\n
